Re: Question for those joining
Tue, May 31, 2005 - 9:28 PMFor me dance in itself is a ritual... When I am truly in my space and power, regardless of where I am... I create a force-field around me than noone enters... Even in a club... I feel the rhythmic beat, vibration, the flow, and melody and though my eyes are closed (I cannot dance if they're open as vision is distracting to the music) noone comes into my space and I do not run into anyone else... though I spin all over the place... If I do happen to open my eyes I can see a perimeter around me. It's pretty cool...
I've danced with the moon... and made love to her glowing touch... of course, I was under the influence of mushrooms at the time... <grin>

Re: Question for those joining
Sun, July 24, 2005 - 7:14 PMTo me dance IS ritual.
When I dance, I am meditating, my mind is free (of worry, stress, conscious thought), and I just am.
As was mentioned earlier, I experience this whether I am bellydancing alone or with my troupe, or dancing at a club.
I think using dance before ritual helps to clear your mind, like meditation before ritual.
Peace.

Re: Question for those joining
Sun, July 31, 2005 - 10:25 PMDance is all about moving energy. Ritual is all about moving energy. Healing is about moving energy. And it's just that simple.
Dance can raise energy, evoke emotion, put you in touch with your emotions, put you in a trance state and make way for visions or journey work. When dancing with others you connect with others, move in synergy and there's something very healing about that, too.
There's something very primal about movement and rhythm. Trance dance is a well-utilized tool by the Shaman. Instead of doing "your usual moves," let your body tell you how it wants to dance. Shut off senses you don't need--blindfold yourself, lose yourself in the rhythm, shut off your chattering "monkey brain" and see where you get to.
In performance, the energies you choose to channel into your dance, you can channel right out into those viewing you, your audience. Dance for healing? Dance for joy? Set your intent for your dance. Dancing with intention behind it is so much more pleasurable to watch than belly dancers that look like they're showing off or giving their energy away.
Dance the elements, Earth Air Water Fire. What kind of movement does fire/passion/creativity evoke? Dance like a flame? What kind of movements does air/wind/conversation evoke? Dance like a feather? (you get the idea...) what does it make you feel like to dance an element? How does it feel in your body? What does it remind you of? How are these feelings embodied in your life? What people hold these energies for you? (almost like a free association).
Belly dance also easily lends itself to chakra work. Shimmies to open and clear your root chakra, hip circles to open and clear your belly... right on up to "Sufi spins" to open your crown. A moving meditation just like yoga is a moving meditation. All these things can easily carry over into performance.
Hope that makes sense!

Re: Question for those joining
Mon, August 1, 2005 - 4:40 PMWell, I think Jennifer summed it up for me. I really move into a trance-like state whenever I dance, actually this always happens whether I mean to or not! So now, when doing bellydancing, I basically set my intent for whatever I am trying to manifest, unblock, etc.
Thanks for a great question!

Re: Question for those joining
Wed, December 21, 2005 - 3:28 PMI love what Jennifer had to say...It's how I feel about the subject as well.
Like many others, I too dance the Elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water. I love to do pagan storytelling through dance. It's fun to dance out the story of a god or goddess, a creation story, etc.
Being pagan, I love to dance with candles, incense, and other fun, meaningful props.
I like to breathe breath and music into particular areas of my body and use that energy to dance and/or do ritual work through that part of my body.
Jennifer said a lot of really important things.
One thing she said was:
"Dancing with intention behind it is so much more pleasurable to watch than belly dancers that look like they're showing off or giving their energy away."
I 100% agree with that! I've seen many bellydancers who just don't have spirit behind their dance, and it gives me the creeps.
I can see right through people, and I try to stay away from negativity. Some people are so negative and...well...wrong...and it shows right through them when they are performing.
On the other hand, when I watch bellydancers (such as my troupemates!) who have spirit in their dance, their positive energy spreads to those around them, to those watching them dance.
There's something so ritualistic and beautiful about someone dancing and projecting radiance that the audience becomes a part of with the dancer. She is directly effecting those around her...Magik! -

Re: Question for those joining
Wed, December 21, 2005 - 10:13 PMDance= meditation/trance for me as well. Interesting that Amber chooses to exclude everyone from her practice. I can empathize with where she is coming from though. I find it more fun to include and play and participate with others in the dance. I've never tried to make it about anything other than an internal search and am intrigued with the idea of looking to something larger.

Re: Question for those joining
Fri, February 16, 2007 - 12:28 AMWow, y'all've been quiet around here for awhile.
Indeed i find dance to be an amazing asset to moving energy during healing work. I have helped "midwife" women through intense emotional healing experiences during healing drum circles using movement and dance.
And as for the elements... I have definitely used dance to invoke the directions/cast cirlces.
I have also used dance in solitary, personally transformative rituals/spellwork to 'act out' my intentions, choreographing my movements to give shape and form to whatever i wish to see manifest in my life. potent stuff!

Re: Question for those joining
Sat, February 24, 2007 - 7:07 AMi try to be conscious of all my performances as a spiritual activity--not because I'm trying to be a hifalutin spiritual being or anything, but because the spirituality shows up anyway---its just a matter of recognizing it. Even when the dance is just entertainment, that is Trickster Goddess at work. That said, I feel a special affinity for the Dark Goddesses, and I often create pieces around their archetypal attribues in my dance.

Re: Question for those joining
Sat, September 15, 2007 - 1:15 PMah yessssnesss. in this unfolding moment, movement is all there is. the flow of breath kissed by the wave of fluid resonance creates and recreates this body, this world, this galaxy. my quest is to surrender to the undulating mystery of life becoming itself through moving fluid, the primary mother, the primary healer, the ancient bio-morphic lineage, the link to all. A subject that may be of interest to you for your book, if you haven't already been introduced, is Continuum Movement, developed by Emilie Conrad. check out continuummovement.com

Re: Question for those joining
Sun, October 5, 2008 - 12:06 AMOne of her short video clips hits on something I find pertinent: fear. She comments at the beginning of the clip that as a young dancer she was not aware that fear is the enemy of movement. Yet clearly it is.
Sometimes I begin with qi gong movements, and then flowing with the music and the movement of the qi, let that morph into dance... and there is a flow. But then the all too inevitable thought arises: Is this dance 'right'? Does it look 'right'? Is my technique correct? What would my teacher say? And blam... there is fear, and the flow is broken.
The Tibetan yogini Machig Labdron defined 'demons' as anything that blocks the free play of awareness. I think that applys to movement as well, and the unimpeded of our energy that seeks to manifest in movement and dance. We all have our demons that would impede our dance, our expression of energy and awareness.
There are some nice insights in this thread. Thank you. -

Sun, November 9, 2008 - 3:17 AMI often also use (derwish) spinning, to get into a trance. I love how I feel connected to everything when I do this.
